- Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Stratus Meet Nation's Toughest Emission Rules
- Emissions Reduced Up to 93 Percent
- Redesigned for 2004, Sedans Also Boast Highest Safety Rating
Auburn Hills, Mich., Jan 28, 2004 -DaimlerChrysler begins production this month of Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Stratus sedans meeting California’s stringent clean air standards, making them among the cleanest-running internal combustion vehicles in the world.
All 2004 Sebring and Stratus sedans equipped with the 2.4-Liter I-4 engine and sold in California, New York, Massachusetts, Vermont and Maine will be certified to meet California's Partial Zero Emission Vehicle (PZEV) standard. Tailpipe emissions have been reduced to near zero levels, with emissions of hydrocarbons (HC) reduced 89 percent compared with the previous model and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) reduced 93 percent. HC and NOx are the two primary components of smog.
“We engineered crisp performance and a high level of customer convenience and safety into these uniquely-styled vehicles,” said Larry Lyons, Vice President – Small Vehicle Product Team. “Now our engineers have reduced emissions to the lowest levels of any passenger vehicles on the road.”
To be certified as PZEVs, vehicles must meet stringent emission standards established under California clean air rules:
Tailpipe emissions meeting the Super Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV) standard
Zero evaporative emissions from the fuel tank and fuel system
Emission control equipment warranted for 15 years or 150,000 miles.
The five-passenger Sebring and Stratus sedans have been redesigned for the 2004 model year. The vehicles achieve fuel economy of 22 mpg in city driving and 30 mpg on the highway. The vehicles have also received Five Star ratings in frontal crash tests, the government’s highest crash test rating.

"In an era of car-based crossover sport-utility vehicles — station wagons for those who wouldn't be caught dead in one — Chrysler Group's gritty Dodge brand has redesigned its Durango SUV and kept it a real truck.
The genius of the redesign, though, is more than honoring the integrity of the truck underpinnings. It's blending those with the user-friendly attributes of the car-based crossovers to create an SUV that'll out-tow and out-haul some full-size, truck-based SUVs, yet whip around corners as nimbly and ride as smoothly as the best car-based designs."

2005 Chrysler 300C and Dodge Magnum RT Will Feature HEMI® Power with Maximum Fuel Economy
Up to 20-Percent Improvement in Fuel Economy
Standard Equipment on Chrysler 300C and Dodge Magnum RT
Uncompromised HEMI® Power
Smoothly Transitions from Eight Cylinders to Four in Just 40 Milliseconds
Auburn Hills, Mich., Jan 05, 2004 -The 2005 Chrysler 300C and Dodge Magnum RT will be the first high-volume, modern production vehicles in North America to feature fully-functioning cylinder deactivation when they go on sale in the spring of 2004. The Multi-Displacement System (MDS) will be standard equipment on the Chrysler 300C and Dodge Magnum RT.
“The Chrysler Group MDS seamlessly alternates between smooth, high fuel economy four-cylinder mode when less power is needed, and V-8 mode when more power from the 5.7L HEMI® engine is in demand,” said Eric Ridenour, Executive Vice President Product Development, Chrysler Group. “This optimizes fuel economy when V-8 power is not needed, without sacrificing vehicle performance—2005 Chrysler 300C and Dodge Magnum RT owners will get the maximum benefit without any compromises.”
Owners of the Chrysler 300C and Dodge Magnum RT will receive the powerful benefit of the HEMI engine with the fuel economy that they would only expect from a smaller, less powerful engine.
“The MDS was part of the engine’s original design,” said Bob Lee, Vice President Powertrain Product Team, Chrysler Group. “This resulted in a cylinder-deactivation system that is elegantly simple and completely integrated into the engine design. The benefits are fewer parts, maximum reliability and lower cost.”
Some of the significant technologies enabling the Chrysler Group MDS are the speed of electronic controls, the sophistication of the algorithms controlling the systems and the use of Electronic Throttle Control. The HEMI will be able to transition from eight cylinders to four in 40 milliseconds (0.040 seconds).
The HEMI engine with MDS has completed over 6.5 million customer-equivalent miles through Chrysler Group’s development and durability testing. It is covered by the 7-Year/70,000-mile Limited Powertrain warranty.
The system deactivates the valve lifters. This keeps the valves in four cylinders closed, and there is no combustion. In addition to stopping combustion, energy is not lost by pumping air through these cylinders.
Customers will experience estimated fuel economy gains of up to 20 percent under various driving conditions, and a projected 10 percent aggregate improvement. Improved fuel economy is realized without any change in customer experience—drivers will receive the benefit without changing their driving habits and without compromising style, comfort or convenience.

01/04/04: Dodge Sling Shot Concept
Auburn Hills, Mich., Jan 04, 2004 -Dodge Sling Shot is a boldly distinctive new sports car vision from Dodge – one that’s practical, adaptable and, above all, affordable.
Designed from the ground up to be a driver’s car, with the kind of look, feel and responsive drivability that enthusiasts demand, the Sling Shot concept was designed with fuel efficiency being a key part of its basic design.
Dodge Sling Shot is designed for open-air driving with a main roof panel and side rails over the passenger area that can be stored in the trunk (Sling Shot has two storage areas), while a canvas roof panel can slide back and out of the way like a roll top desk for open-air driving.
Efficient, Responsive and Fun to Drive – Genuine Dodge Character
Sling Shot features a rear-mounted, 3-cylinder, gasoline engine that is tuned to deliver 100 bhp and 0-60 mph time of about 10 seconds due to power to weight ratio of 17.4 lbs/bhp. A five-speed gearbox, rack-and-pinion steering, four-wheel independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes complete the driver-oriented characteristics contributing to the Sling Shot’s efficient, responsive and fun-to-drive personality at the same time delivering up to 45 mpg.
A “Machined” Interior Look
The Dodge Sling Shot concept has an interior design influenced by the legacy of Dodge and Chrysler’s performance past – when “blown” HEMI engines dominated the American landscape. Starting out with engine bits for inspiration, Sling Shot’s interior designers combined these elements into an artful blend of visual excitement and tactical pleasure.
“Sling Shot is a dynamic, creative look at the never-ending quest to offer visually exciting design, structural integrity, operating efficiency and the all –important fun-to-drive quotient in an affordable, entry level sports car,” said Trevor Creed, Senior Vice President – Chrysler Group Design.
