According to the survey released today, the Dodge Ram leads the way with the highest Total Quality score of any truck in the 15-year history of the study. Customers specifically noted that the Ram has the best added storage capability along with the best truck interior ever rated by customers.

The 2009 Ram also includes the first-in-segment coil-spring five-link rear suspension fitted to a solid rear axle that provides ride and handling not found on any other pickup truck. A new 5.7-liter HEMI® V-8 engine with fuel-saving MDS technology provides more horsepower (390 hp) and torque (407 lb.-ft.) while its best-in-class aerodynamics (.387 Cd) improve fuel economy and performance.

The all-new 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 earned top honors in Edmunds’ Inside Line head-to-head competition of full-size pickup trucks. The Dodge Ram 1500 beat the 2009 Ford F-150, Chevy Silverado and Toyota Tundra. The all-new 2009 Dodge Ram continues to win accolades, receiving 15 awards since its introduction last fall.

“After all the points were tallied, the Dodge Ram takes the win with a very well-rounded performance,” wrote Dan Edmunds, Director of Vehicle Testing, Edmunds.com. “The optional RamBox proved itself useful by swallowing 85 pounds of greasy trailer hitch parts in its lockable bins, and its repositionable bed divider is easily the best of its kind.”

Capability testing was conducted over two weeks of day-to-day use and included tow-testing, off-road driving and hill climbing. All test vehicles were crew cabs and included sunroof, navigation system and other convenience features. Trucks were tested against their claimed tow capacity, as well as a fixed-weight face-off in which each truck pulled an identical trailer up a test mountain.

“We knew from previous experience that the Ram’s coil-spring rear suspension works well when the truck is unloaded, but this time we found it has the chops to handle a trailer, too,” wrote Edmunds' Inside Line. “The Dodge Ram impresses us with a solid performance, an understated ability to tow the socks off some others, a feature-laden presentation and rugged good looks.”

When I drive around in this monster pickup, I am reminded that, though Germans fairly own the luxury sedan business and Italians still make unconquerable sports cars, Americans -- that's us -- completely dominate the full-size truck market. Even with the Detroit automakers hanging on by the increasingly strained mercy of U.S. taxpayers, and with the full-size truck segment down a well like nobody's seen since Baby Jessica, the Detroit Three are pickup gods. Honestly, comparing these guys' trucks with those of Nissan and Toyota is like pitting the Carolina Tar Heels basketball team against the Pasadena Polytechnic's boys junior varsity squad. It's just a slaughter.

Los Angeles Times has an excellent article about the all-new 2009 Dodge RAM 1500.

Not only it is a great review of the Ram 1500, but it offers a great insight into the current status of the American automobile industry.

Ah, but the rope sellers and pistol merchants will say, so what? Maybe the D-3 can build decent pickups, but isn't the reliance on sales of big, thirsty trucks and SUVs what put them in the fix they are in?

This is poor, clumsy logic that blames the automakers for the public's folly. Notwithstanding all the other factors -- the miserable failure of the federal government to levy a significant gas (or carbon) tax, oscillations in the price of oil, the sucking economic quicksand of Depression 2.0 -- pickups are the single bright spot for the domestic automakers, a tent pole of reliable sales and profitability around which to rebuild these companies.

Look, America is a huge country whose economic backbone is the entrepreneurial class. Pickups are an utter necessity for work, business and recreation. We can demand that they get far better fuel economy; we can discourage their use as commuter vehicles. But we can't just ban them. Even the Sierra Club needs pickups.

Based on the 2009 Jeep Patriot Sport model, the new Jeep Patriot Rocky Mountain Edition adds uconnect tunes 30-gigabyte stereo, uconnect studios SIRIUS Satellite Radio, leather-wrapped steering wheel with radio controls, body-color door handles and liftgate appliqué, 17-inch aluminum wheels with P215/60R17 all-season tires, ‘Rocky Mountain’ driver and front-passenger door badging, power sun roof with express open/close operation, nine premium Boston Acoustics speakers including subwoofer, two additional articulating liftgate speakers and a 458-watt amplifier.

The 2009 Jeep Patriot 4x4 Rocky Mountain Edition features the Freedom Drive I 4x4 system providing best-in-class four-wheel-drive fuel economy and best-in-class capability in the compact sport-utility vehicle (SUV) segment.

Included in the Rocky Mountain Edition package are refreshed 17-inch aluminum wheels with tech silver paint finish, P235/65 R17 A/S tires, uconnect tunes 30-gigabyte radio, power sun roof, deep-tinted glass, speed control and a ‘Rocky Mountain’ badge.

The 2009 Jeep Liberty remains true to its legendary 4x4 heritage by offering two Jeep Trail Rated® four-wheel-drive systems – Command-Trac® standard with 4x4 models and the optional Selec-Trac® II on 4x4 models.

A 3.7-liter SOHC V-6 engine is standard on all Jeep Liberty Sport and Limited models sold in the United States. The 3.7-liter SOHC V-6 engine provides the 2009 Jeep Liberty with competitive peak power and torque while providing smooth, quiet operation and proven durability. The new Jeep Grand Cherokee Rocky Mountain Edition is based on the 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo model and is available in 4x4 and 4x2 models. Included in the Rocky Mountain Edition package are 17-inch machined-faced aluminum wheels with gray painted pockets, power sun roof, Boston Acoustics sound system, uconnect tunes 30-gigabyte stereo, heated front seats, 12-volt power outlet, chromed body-side molding and a ‘Rocky Mountain’ edition badge.

Since its introduction in 1992, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has revolutionized the SUV market. With its best-in-class traction capability and power, the Jeep Grand Cherokee is designed, engineered and built to master every imaginable day-to-day driving condition, whether on- or off-road.

The 2009 Grand Cherokee Laredo model features a standard soft-touch center armrest cover, leather-wrapped park brake handle, floor mats, interior chromed door handles and audio control buttons.

The standard 3.7-liter V-6 engine provides the 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 210 horsepower (157 kW) @ 5,200 rpm and 235 lb.-ft. (319 N•m) of torque @ 4,000 rpm. A sophisticated Electronic Throttle Control system tailors throttle response to pedal movement based on operating conditions and maintains a consistent vehicle speed on rolling grades when cruise control is active. An exhaust gas recirculation valve helps increase fuel economy.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee’s available Flexible-fuel Vehicle (FFV) 4.7-liter V-8 engine incorporates electronic throttle control, two spark plugs per cylinder, increased compression ratio, improved cylinder-head port flow and a new combustion system. The result is 305 horsepower (227 kW) @ 5,650 rpm, a 30 percent increase, and 334 lb.-ft. (453 N•m) of torque @ 3,950 rpm, a 10 percent increase compared with the previous generation 4.7-liter V-8 engine. It also delivers more than a 5 percent increase in fuel economy. This FFV engine also gives customers the ability to use up to an 85 percent concentration of ethanol (E85) to fuel their vehicles.

Standard Electronic Stability Program (ESP) with Electronic Roll Mitigation maintains vehicle stability in a variety of road surface and weather conditions. Hill Descent Control, Hill Start Assist and Trailer Sway Control deliver off-road and towing capability.

The 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee Rocky Mountain Edition will be available in four exterior paint colors: new Inferno Red, Light Graystone, Bright Silver and Brilliant Black.

"Dodge added “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown” swagger to its Ram act in 1994 and has been amplifying it ever since, including the Ram’s makeover for 2009.

There are other design touches that scored big. Although it was upstaged by Ford’s King Ranch treatment, the Ram’s leather-lined Laramie interior is almost as handsome and almost as roomy, rivaling the F-150 in terms of dashboard design, general comfort, and fancy stitchery. The double-decked glove box is the only useful glove box in the group, almost every small storage nook in the cab has a rubber liner to damp out rattles, the dashboard sports a 115-volt outlet, and though the rear cabin still has a driveline tunnel down the middle, it also has a pair of fairly deep under-floor storage wells and two storage bins under the seat.

The other big deal here lies beneath the cargo bed. Although the Ram retains a traditional live axle, it has forsaken traditional leaf springs for a coil-spring setup. This has produced two effects: one positive, the other not. Positive: Ride quality is distinctly superior to the Ram’s rivals, particularly in the dirt. Negative: The coil-spring rear suspension limits towing capacity to 8700 pounds max. Which do you think our scoring prioritized, comfort or towing? Right, comfort.

Though the Dodge was only 40 pounds lighter than the F-150, it was quicker than either of its rivals, as you’d expect with a 390-hp Hemi under the hood and a 3.55:1 rear end. The downside of this, of course, was the worst fuel economy, 14 mpg. Even so, the thrust of that engine and the sounds that go with it are hard to resist. Add that to a solid platform and innovative design, and you have a winner. Our Pat Bedard went so far as to call it a “breakthrough truck.” He didn’t get much argument."
